To protect your eyes from sun rays a good pair of sunglasses should have A,B, and C protection. A- is for aging, B- is for burning, and C- is for cataract and cancer. For extra protection there is polarization. This reflects the glare and allows you to see about 4-6 feet into the water while fishing. In my opinion the most appropriate pair of polarized sunglasses are Maui Jim hands down! They come with a glass lens which is a little heavy, and then they also have a polycarbonate lens which is a lot lighter as far as weight. There are others brands such as Costa del mar, sunglasses Oakley sunglasses, and Rayban sunglasses. You can also get these in prescriptions, so you can use one pair to do it all. Make sure you get the pair that suits you best accessories with straps so that don’t fall off, and make sure you use the appropriate cleaning solution. The better you take care of them the longer they will last.

Another great use for polarized glasses is for gigging or bowhunting. Yes, these are done primarily at night. However,during sunset and sunrise there is ample light but its not shining in the water (fish still think its dark) you can see fish is murky water that you normally wouldn’t. There has been numerous times i’ve been gigging and actually use artificial light with my sunglasses on. Where I fish using this method is usually a very short window in the evening and morning(no more than 30minutes).
