We have no shortage of entertainment at our house, thanks to the fine folks at Roku. We subscribe to Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime and DirecTV Now, all of which I highly recommend, even though none of them are paying me to say so. My busy crochet season occurred right as the network TV stations went on their winter hiatus, and to top it off, my husband bought me a new tablet for my birthday at the end of November. I refer to my tablet as a “Happy Fun Pad”, and this new one is absolutely amazing. I can actually do “real work” on it, as opposed to my previous tablets which were good for facebook and playing games, but not much more. Admittedly, my addiction to technology is a hindrance to my productivity with yarn. The point I am trying to make here, as long winded as it may be, is that without good programming to keep my eyes busy while my fingers fly around some yarn, my temptations to check social media or play a game on my Fun Pad become far too great to resist.
For not only my future reference but for yours if you are hunting something good to watch, I have decided to list my 20 most favorite shows to binge watch while crocheting and where I find them. (Note: this list is in the order of my thought process, and not necessarily ranked by favorites)
1. Grey’s Anatomy (Netflix, Hulu)
I have been watching Grey’s since I still had 2 parents on this earth. During the summer, I rewatch the entire series up until the current season, and I do this every year. Seriously. I love me some Grey’s Anatomy, even though many times that show brings me to ugly tears!
2. Desperate Housewives (Hulu)
As you know, I just got into this one, but man is it good! My mom really enjoyed it and tried to get me to watch it when it was still airing, but I’m actually really glad I never gave it a shot, because now it is like a brand new show to me!
3. The Good Doctor (Hulu)
I really thought I was going to hate this one. How many medical dramas do I really need in my life? And an autistic surgeon? The concept really sounded silly to me. I resisted giving it a shot last year when it came out, but when that holiday hiatus showed up and I had already rewatched Grey’s, my daughter and I begrudgingly decided to give it a watch. We were fully hooked by the end of the pilot. If you have been hesitant to get on board with the Good Doctor, just give it a watch. I bet you won’t regret it!
4. A Million Little Things (Hulu)
Another one that I waited a bit before trying out, although it is still in its first season. I started watching this one over the hiatus, and was highly disappointed when I realized that I was already caught up and waiting for the next episode. I hope this series has a long run!
5. The Fosters (Netflix)
This is one my daughter was all into, and in the interest of knowing what my child is doing, I gave it a watch. It wasn’t long before I was seasons ahead of her, and she was like, “Mom! quit watching this show so I can catch up with you!” The series ended last year, but it is a very entertaining teen drama.
6. This Is Us (Hulu)
If you have not yet watched This Is Us, you must be a dude. Oh, what an amazing show this is! Even if you are a dude, I think you will enjoy this show. My husband hit play on a paused episode while I was making dinner one evening, and even though it was midway through an episode in the 3rd season, it caught his interest. I was going back and forth from the kitchen to the living room answering questions like “Who’s that guy?” “Why is their kitchen so old?” “Wait, I thought this show took place in the 80s. Why is she on an iPhone?” If a show can interest my spouse like that, it is definitely a winner!
7. It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia (Hulu)
Now, this one is not a drama, nor does it actually have a point, but it is hilarious and great for watching when you can’t really pay attention to the TV fully. (Like when you’re writing a pattern or a blog post!)
8. F is For Family (Netflix)
Another non-drama show, this one is animated. Created and voiced by comedian Bill Burr, my major complaint about this show is that I can rip through a whole season in a day and then I have to wait a year for the next season. Super hilarious, nonetheless!
9. Breaking Bad (Netflix)
I missed the boat on this one when it was a new show, but like Desperate Housewives, I was glad that I did. What a great show! Halfway through the series, I started noticing that there were certain colors frequently used, particularly that the sister-in-law was always clad in purple. I did a quick search to see if I was the only person who noticed this, and found that the creator actually had a whole thing going on with the use of different colors in the show. Very deep, and very fascinating. Well worth the watch (and probably rewatch this coming summer when I lose my will to crochet again!)
10. Better Call Saul (Netflix)
The prequel series to Breaking Bad. I didn’t think I would like this show with no Jesse Pinkman or Walter White, but it turns out that I was wrong. Jimmy McGill is fascinating on his own!
11. The Detour (Hulu)
This one is another ridiculous comedy about a highly dysfunctional family’s misadventures. I like it.
12. Friends (Netflix)
Obviously Friends makes the list. I don’t know a single person who does not love this show!
13. Killing Eve (Hulu)
I did not think I would like this one because I normally don’t care for the BBC’s programming and I am so used to Sandra Oh as Dr. Yang.(Grey’s Anatomy) Even though there is only one season at the moment, it was a very entertaining season and I am looking forward to season 2.
14. Gilmore Girls (Netflix)
It goes without saying that Gilmore Girls: a year in the life is included here as well. I love me some Gilmore. Its like comfort food for my face!
15. The Sopranos (Amazon Prime)
I was late to the party for this one as well. I started watching it back in 2006 when my father passed and I had no desire to get off of my couch. I actually still have not seen the finale episode, but at this point I felt the need to start over again. (I am currently in season 6 and have forgotten to continue watching for the last few months, so I might have to start over yet again!)
16. Freaks and Geeks (Netflix)
This one I can rip through in a day, and I usually do about once a year. Such a pity that it was never renewed for a second season!
17. Eastbound and Down (Amazon Prime)
If you have not tried this gem, I highly recommend you do so. Another ridiculous comedy, but oh so good!
18. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (Amazon Prime)
I just found out about this show when Season 2 appeared in my list of stuff I might enjoy, and I am actually really happy that I didn’t know about it last year, because for 3 days, I had something “marvelous” to watch! If you haven’t seen it yet, you had better get started. There is a reason this show has won awards. The clothes alone are enough to want to watch more and more of!
19. Station 19 (Hulu)
I normally think spin-offs are lame (I’m talking about you, Private Practice), but this one is so well-done! Rather than another medical drama, this one follows a former dr to his new career as a fireman and all the drama that a fire house brings. My only complaint is that this show is not coming off of its winter hiatus until March!
20. Weeds (Netflix)
I found this show years ago (2011) and it is really entertaining. I like to rewatch the series every few years. I haven’t watched it since 2016, so perhaps over the summer I will get back to it!
