I had such fun designing this square for the CAL. I love how versatile the Granny Stitch is and how you can combine it with more complex stitches to create something unique and lovely with a vintage feel. The Granny Stitch is the first stitch I learned when I was a beginning crocheter, and I made SO many blankets using only the Granny Stitch. All of my blankets looked different though because of the colors I chose for each one. I also varied whether I was doing grannys in rows, in small squares that I joined, one big granny, or even a giant granny rectangle.

As I grew in my crochet talents, I somewhat abandoned the Granny Stitch as I learned and mastered new stitch techniques and combinations. The old Granny Stitch began to feel stale and boring to me as I had spent so many years (like seriously a decade or more) working up countless blankets using that stitch.

Now, it is fun to come back to my roots as a crocheter and pair that with my more advanced design skills to create a square for the Granny Stitch Blanket Crochet-A-Long.

This is the second year I have participated in this event. Last year I had designed a very complex square but when I went to send it in a few days before the deadline, I realized that I had completely neglected to include the Granny Stitch element in my design. Now I had only a short amount of time to come up with an entirely new concept, so I went a little bit easy and whipped up the Trading Grannies Square, which ended up turning out beautifully!

This year though, I not only remembered to include our dear Granny Stitch, but I also gave myself plenty of time to come up with a concept that I love. (In fact, I might be stealing part of it to use in another design that has been tumbling around in my brain!)

This pattern is Square # 10 in the 2024 Granny Stitch Sampler Blanket CAL. Each square will be available forever free on the designer’s respective blogs. Nice square but I can’t create a document so what good is it. It’s NOT FREE.

It’s probably an issue with my tension, but I struggled with round 5 and round 6.

Round 5 wasn’t laying flat and it was making round 6 awkward! In case anyone else is finding this, I added in a chain between the two sc3l stitches in the middle of each side, taking the stitch count from 56 to 60 and this helped round 5 to lay much flatter. It also made it easier to place the GS’s in round 6.

Additionally, in round 6, I found I needed an extra chain before and after the corners. So (3dc,ch2,3dc) in the corner space, then chain 1, then follow with (skip 3, GS) three times, then chain 1 before making the next corner as normal. Total stitch count increases from 68 to 76.

From round 7 onwards, there’s enough ‘give’ in the GS’s to cover the extra stitches I added in, so returned to pattern as written.
