Pattern Release: the Ring Pop Scarf and Headband

Hello friends!

I am so excited to share a double pattern release with you today- the Ring Pop Scarf and Ring Pop Headband. These patterns are available individually or as a mini bundle, and they were so much fun to design- I know you are going to have a lot of fun making yours too!

There’s a bit of a backstory behind these designs- my friend Sati from Rows & Roses (learn all about her business in this interview) sent me 2 hanks of her hand dyed Hip Hop DK yarn several months ago.

This yarn was sooooo gorgeous, and I could not wait to get started designing something fun! But then something strange happened- every stitch combination I tried somehow changed this gorgeous yarn from bright pink and bold purple to… ugly mud. I tried simple stitches, complex stitches, making a square, making a triangle, open mesh stitches, my signature Dolphin Stitch… every stitch came out looking terrible and I was becoming so frustrated.

I had other projects to tackle, so over the course of several months I would pick up the Hip Hop yarn between other projects and try another combination, hate it and set it aside. Rinse and repeat.

Finally, at the beginning of October I decided to learn a new crochet technique I hadn’t tried before- broomstick lace. It turns out that my Hip Hop Hanks (say that 5 times) had been waiting to be turned into a broomstick lace!

As soon as I mastered the broomstick technique (don’t worry- its quick to learn!) and determined what stitch I wanted to use to break up the brooms, the Ring Pop Scarf worked up over a couple of weekends! It won’t take you nearly as long as it took me, unless you too have a Ruby Sue Shih Poo who thinks that the big crochet hook should probably be her toy and not your crocheting tool. (Yes, many a battle was fought over my 15.75mm crochet hook)

I got the scarf to the length I wanted and had used over 2 hanks but still had quite a bit of yarn left, so I decided to make a matching beanie. Cue ultimate disappointment- I didn’t have enough yarn to complete the hat! (I am going to have to re-design the hat with a different yarn soon because I really loved the way I was incorporating the broomstick lace technique in the design.)

So a-frogging I went again, and this time I decided to make a headband to match the Ring Pop Scarf.

I even took time to make a video tutorial on my Rumble channel to show you how to do the broomstick lace technique!

You can purchase the patterns individually or save when you buy them as a set.
